Assam police hold up Meghalaya bound trucks carrying essential items

Amid coronavirus outbreak, police from Kukurkata outpost under Goalpara in Assam had allegedly halted a truck carrying essential commodity which was on its way to Garo Hills.

The matter has taken such a turn that a letter has been written by the chief secretary of the state of Meghalaya to his counterpart in Assam seeking for non hindrance to trucks carrying essential supplies to Garo Hills.

The outpost is now in the limelight for two instances of vehicles bound for Garo Hills being blocked allegedly on demand for money from them.

The situation has now come to such that police escort is now being provided to convoys that are meant to bring supplies to Garo Hills, leaving a very bad taste in the mouth.

According to district sources, two vehicles, with essential supply of stock were bound for Jengjal and Rongram yesterday, Mar 26, from Guwahati but were allegedly stopped by the cops at the outpost.

According to Ram Singh, the deputy commissioner of West Garo Hills (WGH), escort services for food stock trucks would be provided from today onwards for trucks that go and come back from Guwahati bringing back essential food stock to the region.

Reports of police harassment of vehicles at the Kukurkata outpost were made known to the DC. The outpost borders the district of NGH. The outpost has been known to waylay trucks and vehicles from Garo Hills in the hope of extortion from them.
