Security beefed up along Manipur-Myanmar border to tackle drug peddling

Security along the Manipur-Myanmar border has been beefed up after Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh on Monday said that drug peddling in the border areas is on the rise.

He made the statement on the first day of the two-day Manipur Assembly session.

As per reports, police, Assam Rifles, and other security forces have increased patrolling in the border areas.

Biren Singh, while speaking in the Assembly, said that the drug peddlers are mainly targetting the school-going children and hence it became pertinent to increase the vigil to try and put a check into it.

He further informed that security personnel and the central anti-narcotics cells, on an average, have been seizing drugs and other contraband items thrice a week.

According to police sources, international drug peddlers in large numbers have been entering India.

Police last week arrested three men with drugs worth over Rs 400 crore, the biggest haul in the Northeast so far.

Sources informed that smugglers have been using the unmanned 364 km border with Manipur and the construction of the 10-km boundary wall near Moreh was also suspended following objections raised by Myanmar.
